During the past 10 years, I've been in and out of more
than 60 lists, most of them professional and a few
"for fun". I am also the owner/moderator of several
lists.

In my experience, the best way to host a list is
through YahooGroups because:
1) All emails are automatically archived and the
archives are easy to search
2) It allows a person to manage their all lists
together in once place
3) The No-Mail feature allows a subscriber to read and
reply from the YahooGroups site without having all the
email arrive in their inbox, if they so choose
4) Of the many groups I'm subscribed to on the
YahooGroups site, I've never seen SPAM in any of them
5) Subscription can be open or restricted

Perhaps the list-owner would think about moving this
list to YahooGroups, to see if that took care of the
SPAM.

Since re-joining the Tango-L list, I too have been
flooded by SPAM. In addition, I find it quite
inconvenient to have to receive all the emails in my
Yahoo Inbox. It would be so much nicer to be able to
read & reply from a user-friendly site like
YahooGroups.

Kate -

I'm not the list owner (not sure who is...) but I manage a number
of lists and I'm wary of the "hidden" costs of Yahoo (mostly advertising).

I believe the recent flood of spam is the result of an infected user
with old tango-l messages saved on their machine - the addresses of
all mail found on that machine will have been harvested and used to
spoof additional virus replication from a presumed known (and trusted)
user. There are several virus currently in action that use this mechanism.

See for example:

The best way to protect against these virus infestations is to not run
Microsoft operating systems ;-)

Oh, God,please, no ! I am on tangotokyo yahoo groups, and that is more than
enough for me. I am on a lucky day if I receive any useful Tokyo-related
information from there, most of the new posting members are just record
stores in Argentina, some bandoneon museum in BA sending advertisement,
hapless musicians looking for employment or record contracts or funding for
some film, and they are not even playing tango...And the yahoo group mail
frame is extremely user unfriendly, IMO. Small, difficult to scroll, with an
unpleasant font...
And worst of all, if I want to read someone's message in that frame , I have
to click on a date or a subject for that, and the frame opens showing me
bosomy hydroperoxide-blonde in a leotard, who tells me in large red letters
"Loose five pounds now !", (at the bottom of the page it says in very small,
thin, black letters: 'To continue to message, click here').
No thank you.

No no no!!!

SPAM following becoming a member is the most unlikely due to the
ListServProgramm! Actually if one way of being the least effected by
spam du to a mailing list it is through this programm.

IMHO spam resulting from tango-L (if it really exists as I am on
tango-L for a long time now and spam activity has not gone up through
this group) ... could only have one reason: unfair 'users'
subscribing to tango-L and later using the e-mail-adresses generated
through postings. You'll have the same effect with yahoo-groups.
Actually even worse as the archive could easily be searched by
robots.

In fact: everytime a subscribe to another mailing-list hosted by
yahoo-groups immediately much more spam comes in! :-((( yahoo for
mail is reknown as great for spam'ers ... as is yahoo-groups!!! :-(
Just cruel reality!

"User-friendly-site" yahoo ... I do not believe any user-friendlyness
for this provider ... but I would immediately subscribe that I feal
absolutely unsure and definitely unvcomfortable about what they'll do
with my personal data! :-(((

yahoo & hotmail = the provider I'd trust less than my enemy! :-(((

reading mailing-list-postings through a website ... never ever I do
this ... and I am online since the early days. why should I? I
definitely do not enjoy all those lousy advertising on those website
... you'll have to click through a cascade of pop-up-windows etc. pp.
:-((( even the postings you'd receive through conventional e-mail do
hold an advertising line at the end. yahoo & co. encourage to use
(unsecure) html-mail ... getting away the attraction from the content
towards layout.

from my point of view there is no [N=0] argument ever to leave super-
performing listserv towards a yahoo-group-based one.

with modern internet connections and the help of the great e-mail-
programmas for your desktop but also for the web-portals of free-mail-
provider you can easily sort any incoming mail to various folders ...
allowing you extreme comfort to read!

::: p l e a s e :::
leave tango-L as it is ... it is perfect that way!!!
