for directly editing mp3 try mp3DirectCut :
https://www.rz.uni-frankfurt.de/~pesch/
For normalization try this one:
https://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/
(does not work with every player)

you may find a used laptop (about 3 years old) running WinME under 600$.
Minimum 800 Mhz, USB port, CD Drive with Digital Audio Extraction if
you want to produce the mp3 on the laptop. Hard disk as large as
possible, but if you know the songs you really need, you could restrict
them to 1000 (4-6 GB).
You also need an external soundcard (Soundblaster mp3+ for 60$),
software for djing (www.mp3tunes.nl for 15$),
software for extracting mp3, and a lot, lot of time!

Thanks for the info, especially the normalization program looks interesting.
I use Audacity (Freeware at https://audacity.sourceforge.net/ ).
Generally I can only advise AGAINST using mp3 files as a base for sound editing.
As said elsewhere, it is a lossy format, so every time you edit the file and save it
again you get more "noise". So if you need to edit it, take a wav-file as a base,
do all editing and then encode the result as mp3 file. This way you will only
have one step of mp3-encoding.
For normalization I actually use a plugin for Winamp 2, which adjusts the volume
"on the fly". It can be found at https://tomstdenis.home.dhs.org/ under "Winamp DSP Plugins".
But it's of course only of use with Winamp 2.

I use Winamp 2 and Winamp 3 in parallel (https://classic.winamp.com/ ) and they're free.

You might want to check out this webpage. They sell rebuilt laptops for very
reasonable prices:
