Hi Michael,
What's off topic? Tango is more than just a dance, it is also a cultural
experience, and getting a mate habit is one of the risks we take when we immerse
ourselves:)
Of the brands that I can find reliably here in Sacramento, California, I
prefer "Rosamonte Especial" for it's rich flavor and consistency. My favorite,
however is hard to find. "La Merced" comes sealed in a foil bag inside a green
box and has the smoothest and nicest flavor that I have experienced so far. I
was able to get it locally long enough to get hooked on it and then it
disappeared. When I found a supply in a mercado on Riobamba near Corrientes I
shamelessly cleaned them out. Fortunately there was no problem bringing the
stuff back through customs.
Oscar Mandagaran grew up in Missiones where much of the yerba mate is
produced. During one of his stays here he taught a workshop on the history,
customs, and lore of mate as well as how to prepare and share it. It was
fascinating. If you ever have Oscar in your town you might want to add this to
his itinerary. Ciao..................

Don't laugh because I think this may be cheating just
a little (okay maybe a whole lot!). Recently the
Republic of Tea came out with a "Mate Latte" that is a
blend of cocoa and Brazilian mate. It is advertised
to be full-bodied rooibos (I don't know what that is),
cactus flowers and almonds. All I know is that I had
a cup with a teaspoon of steamed milk of this
so-called Mate and it was awesome. Maybe this is
just my wanta-be Yerba Mate. [So far, the two or
three brands of Yerba Mate I have tasted have been
bitter, yet I love sipping tea through the bombilla
and the mate vessel while immersed in tango music.]
Kind regards,
Susan

I've tried many brands ; so far I prefer Guayaki.
I know it is not one of the traditional brands , but it has a smokey , deep
and rich flavor that I like and have not found in any other brand.
It is organic , comes from Paraguay , and is sold in health food stores.
It's the most expensive mate that I've seen ; $8.95 for 250g/8.8 oz.

I don't know if I would like mixing mate with cocoa and milk, but I
did try making "mate expresso" in a stove top expresso maker.
The verdict? It tasted fine, but my first batch was very strong.
Compared to coffee, I need to put less yerba for the same amount of
water. I was using yerba from Brazil made for the uruguyan market.
For North-american urbanites, this "mate expresso" is perfect because
it takes less time to prepare and consume. ;-) If only more coffee/tea
houses would prepare them.
By the way, here's the entry for yerba mate in the Wikipedia site:

Search from anywhere on the Web and block those annoying pop-ups.
