I recently DJ'd a Milonga and had a separate screen displaying an image
of the relevant band/singer.
This was done manually and, as most Tandas were by the same,
singer/band it was not too difficult.
The concept was well received by the dancers.
However:-
Does any one know of software that will match images to music.
So that when you play a piece of music the relevant image, which you
have connected to that piece, will automatically display.

Alas, I can't help you with regard to what you are
seeking, but I just wanted to heartily thank you for the
effort you are making to help us dancers who want to
further educate ourselves about orchestras, singers, and
song titles. It would be really great if all DJs did this,
even if an elaborate projection screen was impractical,
and it was just plain lettering in a large font on
a cheap video monitor facing the floor that dancers who
wanted to could read as they danced by. But as you say,
unless a DJ wanted to type the info in by hand each
song (which would soon get to be intolerably tedious),
you'd need software to automatically lift those fields out
of whatever the mp3-playing software the DJ was using,
and display it on the other monitor.

If anyone uses a mac with iTunes, I've made a screen saver that does just that.

Contact me if you would like me to send it to you.

This is possible with iTunes.

Under iTunes there is a third party plug-in called Cover Version which
will display cover art on the iTunes window while the track is playing.
So you can set up a playlist, start the playlist, turn on the
Visualizer, set it to fill the screen. If you have a projector linkup
you could send this image to a projector and project it large at the
venue onto a light wall or onto a conventional screen.

iTunes allows you to cut and paste cover art or other jpg images into
the cover art field of the track library. (Some tracks may be locked
into the actual cover art if you bought them from iTunes (I think that's
a bug) but most will be editable and you can put in whatever art you
want). I frequently use historical images of artists (or any artistic
dance image I like) rather than the album cover.

My experience is on Mac only--not sure with Windows versions of iTunes.

Of course, just because software allows this to be done (or because you
can do it manually) does not mean you do not need a license to project
or display certain artwork at a public venue synched up to music. In the
US, this type of use requires a music synch license. Most commercial
venues with music (bars, theaters, etc.) will have a typical ASCAP
license for their venue for recorded or live music, but many will not
have a synch license for recorded or live music synched with images. To
stay legal, as a DJ you have to check with how the venue is licensed and
make sure that use is covered.

Regards,

Roger,

First of all, what software are you using? Some but not all music
players can be configured to execute a program at the end and beginning
of a song in such a way that you can pass song info to the program.

Second, you're likely to get far more helpful answers on the TangoDJ
Yahoo group than Tango-L.

Roger,

I use Media Center 12.0 by jriver. 30 day free trial. Use the cover art mode (or write your own) for playback visualizations. Get it here:

I would like to thank all the subscribers that gave me advice.
However whilst I was adding plug ins, as suggested, to Itunes, it
occurred to me:-
You can use the artwork section add the same picture to each piece by
the same composer/band.
Select all their peices and use "info" to add image.
Then double click on the art work left bottom corner, which brings it up
a separate window.
This can be moved to a another screen.
Problem solved.
Oh. and yes I will subscribe to the DJ forum.
Thanks
Roger
