Dear friends from tango list

There were certain tangos whose title was not related to a double meaning, or a lunfardo word, but just a salute or addressing to someone or a group of people.

The author of the tango El Ingeniero was Alejandro Junissi , a musician and director of orchestra . I could not find a reference to know who could be the engineer to whom this title could be related.

Maybe the father of Blomberg ( author of La pulpera de Santa Lucia with Maciel ) a norwegian engineer named Pedro Blomberg, that came to work into the tunnels of the neighbourhood of Montserrat. The history of this tunnels is a mystery, they link churches and religious buildings underearth .Some of them are allowed actually to walk in, in an area called "Manzana de las luces". Sorry for the side comment, but is one of the aspects of Buenos Aires not mentioned usually, all the underearth corridors that seems to have veen conceived for communication purposes and not as sewages.


From all the tangos that were made especially for an event , or addressed to a person , the "Bailes del internado" series could be considered quite representative.

The students of medicine , made a practice as residents known as "internado" , that include a general practice at an hospital, and several examen , before being entitled to practice medicine on their own.

They use to make a ball dance once in a year, to celebrate the term of the university year, and to party . The ball dancing was increasingly rude year by year (due to very hard jokes that the students made ) and were suspended definitely after an incident where a student was killed by gun shot. This incident , and a post mortem homage, was later used for the tango "El internado/ The resident" from Francisco Canaro, one of the orchestras director that were hired for this yearly events.

There was a condition included into this hiring, the orchestra have to play a brand new tango made specially for the occasion. Therefore Fresedo4s "El once" refers to the 11th time that this dance was held.

I will make a short list of this tangos , there are more, but it will be better to mentioned the subject they have in the title .

So, "Rawson" was adressed to Dr. Rawson , a medicine practitioner.

El Matasano ( a nickname for medicine doctors , the "killer of healthies"), from Canaro, made for the first dance in 1914.

Clinicas , from Lopez Buchardo , made for all the residents at the Clinic General Hospital (which is still open an receiving residents )


El apronte , from Firpo , to the residents at Hospital San Roque , actually Ramos Mejia, for their preparation for the .... dance (not to the exams , sorry ....:). Here we have a lunfardo play of words, since el apronte is also the word used in lunfardo to describe a preparation , borrowed from the turf world, where the training of horses made during the week for the weekend races is called stil today "apronte / warm up " . This apronte/warm up is made since as you may know, turf races are run in several distances, from 1.000 meters to 3.600 usually . Jokingly , Firpo take this word El apronte to compare the young residents as young horses training during the week for the race of the dance .

Paraiso artificial /artificial paradise , made by brother Tuegols and Garcia Jimenez, it mentioned the drugs used in surgery to sleep the patient, it includes an addressing to Dr. Kemmeter.

The 6th ball dance of ... el internado , from Fresedo, an easy title, made for the sexth dancing on 1919 -


And to end with, El Once, mentioned before , this was released for the last dance made by the students , on year 1924 .
