Gustavo Santaolalla is one very successful Argentine musician, composer and
producer. Recently, he won the Hollywood Foreign Press award for the music
he wrote for the movie Brokeback Mountain. And he has been nominated for an
Oscar for best song in the same movie. Friday night he and his group
Bajofondo Tango Club presented a concert at Lincoln Center in New York City.
He is producing one of the most important tango music projects--Cafe de los
Maestros. The Film & Arts channel in Buenos Aires has been broadcasting a
short clip which was filmed during the studio recording of the compact disc
that will be produced by Santaolalla.
The purpose was to unite all the great musicians and singers of tango for a
recording. The program includes Emilio Balcarce, Carlos Garcia, Atilio
Stampone, Jose Libertella, Osvaldo Berlinghieri, Horacio Salgan, Leopoldo
Federico, Virginia Luque, Lagrima Rios, Alberto Podesta, Juan Carlos Godoy,
Osvaldo Requena, Fernando Suarez Paz, Emilio de la Pena, Oscar Ferrari,
Nelly Omar, Ubaldo de Lio, Mariano Mores--the who's who of tango, all still
living with the exception of Libertella. No one is under the age of 70.
The finale is going to be a live concert at Teatro Colon during March or
April 2006. The date has not been set. Santaolalla is going to be hoping
for another win on March 5 at the Academy Awards. It's no surprise that
practically every movie theater in Buenos Aires is showing Brokeback
Mountain this week.
