The current topic of conversation around the milongas is the recent hiring
of several milongueros to dance with tourists in El Pial. I've been told
that an American woman made this arrangement, and each milonguero was paid
100 pesos for the night. That's a small fortune for them. All I can say
is it's about time! Taxi dancers who can't dance are charging ten dollars
per
hour for their services to tourists. And local teachers (ex-stage
professionals) have been reaping the benefits of tourism with full classes.
Then tourists go to the milongas and dance with other tourists. In order
to get to dance with a milonguero, he has to be compensated. I'm
happy to hear that someone has finally realized it's worth paying to dance
with the best. The milongueros won't be around much longer. None of the
milongueros is so well off that he wouldn't accept payment for dancing with
tourists. The cost of living is rising steadily in Buenos Aires (inflation
is 8.9% so far this year).

Saturday, we celebrated the 76th birthday of Jorge "El Turco" Majluta at
the Milonga de los Consagrados (Saturday afternoons in Centro Region
Leonesa). Jorge won't admit his age, but a close friend of his told me.
Jorge is out dancing every Saturday and Sunday. As far as I know, he lives
alone in Avellaneda. He takes the bus to the milonga. Once I complimented
him on his tie, and he told me it was the only one he owned. I gave him
one for his birthday. His friends Pedro Sanchez, Mario Papasaba, Pepe and
others were there to celebrate with him. Jorge danced his favorite
D'Arienzo vals with several ladies. He loves to dance to Francisco Canaro
as well. What a pleasure it was to dance several tandas with Jorge. No
fancy steps, just great feeling for the music. He often says, que tangazos!

One thing is certain. If one wants to dance with a milonguero or take
classes, it has to happen in Buenos Aires. They can't afford to
travel anywhere. Besides, obtaining a visa is difficult. The US Consulate
recently rejected Pedro Sanchez' application for a visa. He had hopes of
visiting the United States for a few weeks, but his dream is gone. The
only milongueros who have been to the US to teach are Ricardo Vidort and
Ernest
Hector "Dany" Garcia.

When you arrive in Buenos Aires, you can call a milonguero for taxi
service. Osvaldo Vicente Centeno (69) has to work ten hours a day for 50
pesos. He
should be teaching tango instead. Make a note of his cell number if you
plan to visit Buenos Aires: 15-5752-7188. He'll tell you where to dance.

Hello all,
I understand these are the same milongueros who cost $300 USD (almost 900 pesos) for a 3-hour private lesson. If 100 pesos for the night is a small fortune, what's 900 pesos for half an afternoon, the lottery? I actually believe the milongueros may be so heavenly that it's worth it, but honestly, even with my US paycheck, that sounded like too much and I passed. I would have paid 100 pesos for a 1-hour lesson, they would have had their small fortune right there, doing what they enjoy doing. But they missed out on this customer.

TINE,

YOU ARE BETTER OFF. JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE DIVINE
DANCERS DOES NOT MEAN THEY CAN IMPART THEIR KNOWLEDGE
TO ANOTHER. THEY DON'T KNOW 'HOW' THEY DO IT, THEY
JUST DO. oops! I signed on for a class with Pedro
Sanchez to help him out financially, and the $35USD
lesson began ( en castellano) "You know, I am not a
teacher, I am only a dancer." And he was correct. So
I got a solid hour of dancing and lots of attention in
the milongas. The following year he wouldn't look at
me because I would not sign up for a 'private lesson'
altho I had offered to take him and his wife to dinner
to reciprocate for a lovely Sunday dinner in their
home on Father's Day. I am afraid some of them have
gotten very commercial and that sort of spoils it,
doesn't it?

And as for taxi dancers, the milongas are full of them
- hired by Argentine women!

Hi Tine (and the rest)

I don't know who are the milongueros you are talking
about.

The two milongueros that have been in Atlanta in the
last two years, Ricardo Vidort and Cacho Dante (other
milonguero that has made it to the States), charged
$70 per private class each. Also for the workshops the
organizer charged a maximum of $25 (even cheaper when
taking more than one).

If somebody charges 900 pesos, it is way too much, but
as long as somebody is willing to pay....

Just my opinion.

Hi Angel you are right, those milongueros are a little bit expensive....
Anyway, there are plenty of milongueros right here in the good old USA and
they'll dance with the ladies for free ;-). Actually, we'll have a fair
number of milongueros during our Halloween TangoFest in North GA.... Great
chance to dance with milongueros and others too... ;-)
