Dear All, Bellingham swing dances now have all music done correctly by
African-Americans who danced at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem in the
1930s, not by native Bellinghamsters (or 'hamsters, as we affectionately
call them).
And all country & western dances now have all music done correctly by
natives of Nashville, TN or Austin, TX, depending on the song being
played (we switch out DJs on a song-by-song basis to make sure we have
the correct regional representative in the booth), not by native 'hamsters.
And all folk dances of any variety whatsoever now have all music done
correctly by native members of the respective cultures brought in by
temporal displacement when necessary, and not by native 'hamsters.
Give me a break....

Derik,
Michael Figart wrote yesterday in another thread:
"I have the same problem in Houston, milongas without tandas, people who
think tango is background music, and that everyone loves to dance to
Piazzola and Pugliese exclusively. "
Surely you don't call this DJing "correct" ? In Buenos Aires all the DJs I heard play in tandas, I never heard any Piazzolla played, and Pugliese tandas are heard not more than once or twice per evening.
The best DJs I ever heard are Argentine, Irish and Indian. I am Belgian and I play in exactly the same format as the DJs I heard in BsAs and at the better milongas in the US. It's not rocket science and it certainly doesn't require an Argentine birth certificate. Of course you are welcome to nurse your preconceived notions and never attend a milonga that I DJ. In fact, I would greatly prefer it this way.

Dear Michael in Bellingham:
Did you figure out that close embrace on you own
balance is the more correct way, because it allows you
to more easily open the embrace and adjust it like a
bandondeon? On your own balance is in fact the way
the majority of native Argentines dance the tango,
close embrace as well as open embrace. I call it
Argentine close embrace as opposed to US close embrace
which is being stuck....leaning on your partner all
the time close embrace.
Have you now had your mind changed through "back
channels" and are you now listening to the people who
"lean on each other" and make up falsehoods about
tango music at local milongas in places like Houston
and even New York?
Actually, Michael in Bellingham, I do think that you
are an OK guy. I think that you know more about tango
than the people who are telling you stupid stuff
through back channels.
By the way my Canadian partner in the television
business used to live in Bellingham, Washington and he
produced our Canadian content films just across the
border in Vancouver, BC. I also worked with the
X-Files people, Cris Carter and others, who were all
base in Vancouver-LA. Jack, my partner, did say that
Bellingham was a wonderful place and I believe him.
Now I know for a fact that it is a wonderful place
because its music is played by all the right
people....lol. Have a great day.

Fascinating how the loathing and hatred of Derik
induces some respectable members of Tango-L to lose
their wits to the point of missing his joke...
...But thinking of it, aren't the Italian opera houses
the best interpreters of Verdi, the Russian orchestras
of Tchaikovsky, the Hungarian ones of Bartok, Vienna
of Strauss, New York of Bernstein and Brussels of
Cesar Franck?
Why shouldn't then BsAs Argentines, weaned with Tango
playing in the background, be the better arbiters of
Tango?

Dear Tine:
I agree with you. What was said about the music DJ ed
in Houston is a falsehood. As you say, the Argentines
certainly know how to DJ, and they are doing it here
in Houston for all out milongas, so we have tandas and
all, and everything is done correctly as it would be
done in BsAs, with cortinas etc. We are certainly not
dancing to Piazzola and Pugliese exclusively, or doing
anything like that. The whole report is made up
nonsense. None of it is true. Might have happened in
the past, but not anymore. It is a new day in
Houston. Argentines now come to our milongas in
large groups and we welcome them. They play the music
and they DJ and they enjoy themselves. We are lucky
here in Houston.

Know where the absolute best swing/lindy hop dancers in the world come
from? With the exception of Frankie Manning himself, Stephen Mitchell,
Paul Overton and Sharon Ashby, and a handful of other Americans, the
best in the world are probably the Swedes - David Dalmo (one of the best
dancers in the world, period), the Rhythm Hotshots, and a host of others
whose names I can neither pronounce nor spell. Add Ryan and Jenny
Francoise from Great Britain, Marcus and Barbl from Germany, and quite a
few others from the EU and Asia.
The Swedish dancers have dedicated themselves to the study and
preservation of African American dance forms - tap, swing/lindy, hip
hop, etc. They have a big month-long festival in Herrang that is
dedicated to tap and lindy hop.
So nationality isn't always the best indicator of love, dedication,
knowledge or taste - there are probably Argentines from Buenos Aires who
don't know jack and don't *care* that they don't know jack about the
tango. You want someone who absolutely eats, sleeps, and drinks this
stuff to DJ - someone who not only can tell you which band is playing,
from what time period, what song, who the vocalist was, what the lyrics
mean, who was playing first chair bandoneon, whatever, but also a master
at discerning what the crowd needs at what time at night to get the
joint jumpin' or mellow out everyone before they go home. It's an art,
and one that I think is based more on love than nationality.
As to the Derik joking, sometimes it's hard to tell. I'd prefer to have
satire "tags" bracketing commenting his statements sometimes.

It wasn't a falsehood three or four weeks ago, something must have
really happened in that short time period, and I'm glad to hear it. Tine
did NOT say that "The Argentines certainly know how to DJ", she said
that some of the best are Argentine; big difference. So we now have
"tandas and all,...done correctly....with cortinas? Great! Who is doing

Argentines have always come to the milongas in large groups, and they've

Well, Tete certainly looks Argentine to me.
Even in Argentine, what the majority of dancers does depends
on the group of people you're looking at (and not only from
which barrio they come -- some styles seem to spawn less
teachers than others), and, I daresay, even on fashion.
