Dear Manuel:
I agree with you. A calendar database is important,
but "the devil is in the details" behind an event.
That is why Tango-L is a good thing.
That is also why I am doing the
https://www.tangoworldwide.com
model, which allows dancers to post to a calendar,
their personal impressions (videos, audios, maps
comments, discussons, magazine articles etc.,) of a
tango event directly from the scene of the crime
...lol. to a worldwide database like we do
here on Tango-L, but with more options. My
web site and tangomaps.com supports Tango-L and adds
to the information available to dancers. Both have
their advantages and disadvantages, as does Tango-L.
I believe that a comprehensive feedback directly from
the consumer-dancer is perhaps the most reliable
information. The problem is however, that the
consumer-dancers are a bit lazy, but the teachers are
very energetic, so we shall see what happens...lol..
I also agree with Aron. Argentine Tango is social.
People on Tango-L should try not to be a critic
without adding some content of their own for
discussion.
I personally think it is OK to be a bit commercial on
Tango-L, if one is mostly providing other valuable
information as well, like Aron just did. That is
called PR (public relations). I do not think it is OK
to post an advertisement on Tango-L, without any other
beneficial content or discussion. That should be
reserved for Tango-A.
Anyway, this is my personal opinion. Thank you.

Translation: "infomercials" are ok, i.e., Marina Palmer's buddies
astroturfing her book, double-posting to TANGO-A and TANGO-L,
testimonials or posts designed to generate traffic to another website
advertising whatever (hi Ernest W., hi Jak!), etc. In other words,
Ladies and gentleman, the TANGO-L marketplace is officially open for
business!
Y'all have fun - let me know when they start selling bootleg OEM
software and Viagra here.

Hola Listeros,
I received a private reply to my request of "Where to Tango in Paris",
saying that I should have posted it to Tango-A.
I had actually given some thought to which list to post to. I decided
to post to Tango-L because I felt that this kind of messages are:
1 - NOT commercial in nature
2 - There are others on Tango-L who may be interested
I, for one, read many of the responses to "Where to Tango" type requests
with great interest, and dream of the day when I will be going to the
same destination. Obvious exceptions are replies from organizers
to say "come to my milonga". Replies of this nature should be private
and not sent to the list.
Some listeros post their tango/travel logs. I feel that responses to
"Where to Tango" falls in the same cataglory of posts. They reflect
one person's opinions or experiences at certain milongas he or she
attended. These are definitely more interesting to read than the
endless discussions on style that I've seen over the years.
Now, let me put my flame shield on... LOL
Search from anywhere on the Web and block those annoying pop-ups.

Don't worry about the flame throwers. They might just be bored with the lack
of "lively discussion" about other topics ;-) Anyway, I strongly disagree
with the private message you received and here is why:
First, this is a forum to discuss all topics relating to tango and
discussing or asking questions about venues or locations is perfectly within
the allowable topics. Certainly much more useful and informative than some
silly diatribe against a particular way to hold your partner or a boring
explication of the back ocho. I think this rigidity of thought and orthodox
interpretation of some fairly vague guidelines smacks of censorship.
Second, the tango-a has a much smaller number of subscribers so your
question will go to far fewer people. The person who might have the best and
most useful answer for you might not even read the tango-A. If you really
want helpful advise, it would be best to reach the greatest number of people
with your questions.
Third, removing the "commercial" aspects of some posts is like splitting
hairs... How do you praise or support a particular teacher or a particular
event without it being a de facto promotion? If one promotes or lavishly
praises a particular tango teacher, organizer, DJ or event, the organizer,
teacher, etc. will receive more support, attendance and thusly, financial
rewards... Is this so bad?
I say the tango-L is precisely for these types of discussions, questions and
comments. You have my complete approval to ask anything you want about tango
in the tango-L.... Of course, you might not like the answers ;-).......
Free flow of information to all,
Manuel
