Subject: Institutions and tango
One of the characteristics of human behavior is to hold on to our
institutions. Everyone makes choices and has preferences. It is amazing
to me that people on this list chastise others that don't agree with
their choices as if theirs are the only logical choices.
We root for and brag about the colleges we attend, the political parties
we belong to, the churches of which we are members. We do this as a
society as if our organizations, our choices are the only possible
reasonable selection. The fact is each person makes his or her own
choice and it should be understood as valid for them.
I see a lot of the same in the discussions here on Tango-L (no sometimes
more like arguments) about styles of tango, techniques. Some want
desperately to validate their choices as the only and correct choice by
trying to convince everyone that they are the only true and correct
authority.
I am on this list to get a wide and varied perspective of what tango can
be for others. I too have my own prejudices and preferences but I am
always open to learning more. To me tango is a life long learning
experience. I am sure of only one thing that my preferences at this
point in time are correct for me. They may change or evolve over time
but right now this is where I prefer to be.
I would like to see more consideration for other peoples views on this
list without having to insist that the antagonists views are the one and
only way to dance tango.
Experience has taught me that those that argue the most adamantly for an
issue are usually those who feel an insecurity in their position,
desperately wanting to convince others so as to validate their own position.
It really only gets down to ones own personal preferences.
Blessings,
Leonardo K.
