During my three years in BsAs, I've had the opportunity to appreciate the
music of tango more by learning to sing a tango, hearing my partner and
friends sing tango at parties, and going to cafes where anyone can get up
and sing with the accompaniment of guitar and bandoneon.

Sonja Abadi, who goes regularly to dance tango, has organized a Wednesday
night open-mike session at a small restaurant in Belgrano. Each week, those
who love tango come to listen or to sing a tango or two. The night is
totally unrehearsed and spontaneous. Familiar faces from the milongas are
there. Sonja passes out lyrics to several tangos so that everyone can sing
together. I am familiar with the music of Por Una Cabeza, so I recently
enjoyed singing along with everyone with the lyrics in hand.

If we began our study of tango by listening to the music and understanding
the lyrics, there would be not only more feeling in our dancing, we would be
dancing to the music we know and love. So tango dance teachers
everywhere--give your students a homework assignment to listen to selected
tangos for a week and see how their dancing improves. We can only dance to
the music we know and appreciate.

During the almost four years I've lived in BsAs, I've had the opportunity to
appreciate the music of tango more by learning to sing a tango, hearing my
partner and friends sing tango at parties, and going to boliches where
anyone can sing with the accompaniment of guitar and bandoneon.

Sonja Abadi, who goes regularly to dance tango, organizes a Wednesday night
open-mike session with four friends at a small restaurant in Recoleta. Each
week, those who love tango come to listen or to sing a tango or two. The
night is totally unrehearsed and spontaneous. Familiar faces from the
milongas are there. They pass out lyrics to a tango so that everyone can
sing together. The restaurant has a small stage with microphone where the
musicians are ready to play the tango, vals or milonga of your choice.

If you are interested in singing, arrive around 9pm to put your name on the
list with the titles of two tangos you want to sing. They will let you know
when it is your turn to go on stage.
