Subject: news flash - tango campeonata in BsAs gets underway

The first elimination round was held a couple hours ago at El Arranque.
Fewer couples signed up than last year. There were only 12 couples who
danced in two rounds, both to the same tangos of DiSarli, D'Arienzo, and
Laurenz. The judges were Carlos Rivarola, Sergio Cortazzo, and a woman.
These guys are stage performers who teach and never set foot in a milonga to
dance socially, but that's the way it is. A ballroom dancing judge is
qualified to judge an ice-dancing competition, isn't he? The competition
started later than scheduled while staff members went around the milonga
trying to recruit more dancers. They tried to get Irma Barrientos and Jorge
De Gouvea (a milonguero of 70) to sign up, but they weren't interested.

Raul signed up at the last minute with Mirta from Switzerland. He dances
all the time in El Arranque, but admitted to me that he was nervous dancing
with everyone watching him. Everyone got to vote for their favorite couple
which was considered along with the judges' voting. I voted for Raul and
Mirta, and they were one of the two couples selected for the semi-final
round in late June. The other couple that made it to the semi-final round
won the city-wide competition two years ago. They don't dance any better
than they did two years ago. There was a consensus that they may have
elegance, but no compas. So what if the judges didn't notice.

Next round tonight at midnight in Confiteria Ideal.
