"longest running events":

The Finnish Festival Tangomarkkinat started in July 1985 in Sein?joki.
Other sources tell about a first tango festival in M?xico in June of 1980.
M?xico has a strong tradition of tango. See also. "el tango en M?xico". M?xico DF. 1995

Although The Finnish Festival Tangomarkkina might have been going on for a
longer time, is not an Argentine tango festival. I'm not saying there is
anytrhing wrong with it, but I think we are all discussing Argentine Tango..

For crying out loud Chris, Randy has done nothing to apogize for.
Furthermore, the Miami Tango Festrival has been running longer that any
other tango festival in the USA and even in Argentina.... Besides, Randy was
very involved in the initial Miami Tango Festival as well as several years
thereafter.

Cheers,

Manuel

Hey Manuel, lets not forget that also it has been running longer than any
other tango festival in Miami!! ;)

By no stretch of the imagination can that be considered a festival.

And that one is misrep by the organiser. In truth it is only the 2nd
Wuppertal festival.

I guess you have some evidence of that, Christian?

Please do present it.

no worries:
I've been to the festival in 1998 (and this was not the first one!)
And the festival in Wuppertal has been going on every year since.

But - of course - I might be wrong: perhaps you'd just want to ask the organizer of the
festival: Carsten Heveling at Carsten-Heveling@tango-tango.de

With the due respect to all the members of this list, I belong to Tango-L since many years ago and have read most of the comments about this subject and many others:

About the origin of the first tango festival.

Is a tango festival or (any other festival)?

1.-A cultural need from locals to let the world know about it.
2.-The best way to know this culture for foreigners or visitors.
3.-A social request.
4.-A good (or may be bad) business for locals or even foreigner that pretend (both) to know about this subject.
5.-A request for socializing, meeting people or falling in love with somebody.
6.-You can add many others.
7.-Or a certified of property to show us who is Tango?s mom and dad.

Perhaps there are many festivals (or events) in the world of any subject that nobody took the commercial advantage for calling them a festival.

Buenos Aires is a whole year cultural festival particularly since tango was born late 1800's and earliest 1900's, as many cities are since they were founded.

Why do we (human beings) have to discuss about angels? sex and their origin. Except about those who dance at the milongas, of course.

My warmest friendly tango embrace?
Julio C.

I think you must be referring to to the same organiser's tango ball on
17th Oct 1988. Not even the organiser claimed that was a festival.

Very unlikely, since as I already said, the claim that this year's
Wuppertal festival is the 10th is a misrepresentation by that same
organiser.
