I think you'll find it hard to find much recorded before the early 1920s
that's of sufficient fidelity to be fun to dance to for longer than a
short period. But to the advice that has been given so far, I can add
the following :
The Best of Tango Argentino CD, Que Bonboncito, published by DyM,
contains 6 Orquesta Tipica Brunswick tracks, with the only overlap with
Clint's postings being Fruta Prohibida. If you're into musical saws I
can recommend Eduardo Bianco's La Cumparsita (4:39m !) on Harlequin CD
61, Buenos Aires to Berlin, although it was recorded in 1939 and
therefore might be disqualified! Both of these CDs are available from
https://www.thetangocatalogue.com
In addition there is the recently released Di Sarli CD, 1928/1931 on
Coleccion 78 RPM. And for Canaro from this period there is
1926-1927 on El Bandoneon CD134, and from its sister label, Maestros del
Tango Argentino, the double CD BMT601 Las Grandes Orquestas del Tango -
Francisco Canaro, most of whom's tracks are up to 1932.
Finally, you can't leave out Firpo. Virtually everything he recorded,
even post-1932, was pre-1932 in style and fun to dance to.
Good luck,
Geoff
