Recently at a milonga, I heard a good alternative vals song.
I asked the DJ the title of the song, but she only knew this
as a Russian waltz. Another person told me that this song
was used in a Russian movie(s?) and very famous, though
she didn't know the title either.

After Googling, I've found the Russian waltz was discussed
in Tango-L, in May 2006 under the subject
"My Sweet and Tender Beast". The real title
is said to be "My Tender and Affectionate Beast"
by Evgeni Doga/Kolibri.

In a reply to this thread by Lucia
https://mailman.mit.edu/pipermail/tango-l/2006-May/000483.html
an URL at music.allofmp3.com as the mp3 source, but
this site is not responding. It seems to have been shut.

This mp3 file I've found in a Russian site
https://www.zvuki.ru/T/P/23349/mp3/8
is supposed to be for this song. It does sound
similar but I think it's different than I've heard.
May be what I'm looking for is not "My Seet and Tender
Beast" after all.

Does anyone know a different source of this song,
or similar Russian waltz songs used often in milongas?

Thanks.

Kuro

"My sweet and tender beast" is from the Soviet Film
Moj laskovyj i nezhnyj zver (Soviet Union 1978),
adaptation of a Story by Anton Chekhov
composer Evgenyj Doga
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0172812/
you can find the song here:
https://worldmusic.groups.vox.com/library/audio/6a00cd970e4cda4cd500d09e78c7e6be2b.html
the song can also be downloaded from the Website of the composer:
https://www.doga.md/classic.html
it's a ram file, so I'm not sure wether you can get it to play (I don't;)

not to hijack your thread, but that is just beautiful, the violins in the backround (i think that's what they are) are just "haunting".The TangonistaSponsered by P.E.T.A. You need to download and install a Real One Player.
See:
https://service.real.com/learnnav/rfsmil2.html
Then you'll probably need something like RMRecorder to capture it.

There is a CD collection, called Russian Film Music. https://www.musicweb-international.com/film/2002/Sep02/Russian_Film_Music.html
https://www.musicweb-international.com/film/2002/Sep02/Russian_Film_Music_II.html
You can find many waltzes on these CDs, a couple of which are frequently used in milongas. The most common one is the one you mentioned which is actually called My Gentle Tender Beast. One song is often used as a cortina also. There is beautiful music in these compilations for sure, much of it done by the Russian Philharmonic. I like the waltz from Beware of the Car, and some others are probably dance-able besides My Gentle Tender Beast, but there is a tendency for the waltzes to be a little too overpowering in certain passages for dancing in my opinion (the tracks waiver between quiet passages and sudden sound bursts of many instruments), so I've never tried to play them at a milonga. I wouldn't doubt that other people are using them though.

Best regards,

Randy F

I have no idea who invented that name for the film:

"My Gentle Tender Beast" or "My Tender and Affectionate Beast"

I would say that this translation is more correct:

" My Affectionate and Tender-Hearted Animal"

Thank you Anna for the link.
The tune from the vox.com link is very beautiful and
I like that, but it might be a little bit too dynamic
to dance with. I think the version I've heard on
the floor that night was milder and softer, the melody
was somewhat different. But this could be my illusion.
