I need some help, please. I need suggestions/sources for slow milongas
for teaching - either for beginners or for teaching traspie to the more
advanced dancers. I'm finding that I've heard them played at milongas on
occasion, but I can't find them on disc. I've been using Di Sarli's
"Zorzal", but even that is still a bit too zippy for the beginners. I've
heard a version of "Milonga Sentimental" that I think is by Canaro that
is about the right tempo, if that is helpful as a reference point for
what I'm looking for.

Thanks,
Michael

One of the good reasons why dance schools use only a
piano for basic teaching: unaldurated rhythm and a
melody that has to be sustained through movement. No
distractions. Try Arminda Canteros on Philips. I use
it regularly myself when practicing polishing moves
(not of furniture though)...About last 1/3 is
Piazzola, but the beginning is fabulous, and for me
these are some of the greatest Tango interpretations
ever.

Look for milongas by Canaro, Donato and D'Arienzo but especially Canaro.

Canaro: Milonga Sentimental, Mata las penas, Largas las penas, Negrito
and about 6 more _slow_ milongas that I have. Canaro has a lot of
shlock of course (entire Milongueando con Canaro CD for example except
for Oiga Rubia track).

Donato: Papas calientes, Ella es asi, El torito and several more
_slow_ milongas.

D'Arienzo: Mostly good quicker milongas, but also De Pura Cepa,
Silueta Porten~a,

Michael,

I use Canaro's 'Milonga sentimental'. Also other Canaro:
'Milonga criolla'
'Silueta porten~a'
'Milonga de mis amores'

Some Donato:
'Papas calientes'
'Ella es asi'

After a bit of time I'll introduce some of those slow DiSarli milongas
(Rufino vocals), like 'Zorzal' and 'Yo soy de San Telmo', but although
these are slow, the rhythm is not as clear as in the Canaro and Donato
milongas. Could be the poor recording quality of the versions I have,
though.

Michael, there are several slow beautiful milongas by Canaro:
milongon
milonga del 900
milonga criolla
Negrito
milonga sentimental, among others

there is also a beautiful version of Milonga Sentimental by Carabelli,
if you can find it.

also don't forget Donato- Ella Es Asi...his other milongas are a little
faster but playful and gorgeous...
happy milongas,
Ilene

If you want slow music to teach milonga to
and if the music does not have to be milonga
Try these two songs

La Vie en Rose by Grace Jones
and
Somewhere over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawole

I especially love dancing to Somewhere over the Rainbow.
It's like a slow Canaro, and you can even use it for traspie

Timmy in Cleveland

P.S. Watch for Florience Taccetti in Cleveland, Oct 21 - 24
