Subject: wine and tango
Jonathan says:
" I was obsessed with tango the dance for a few years. A
few years back the obsession dissipated and I was struck with the
knowledge that tango music and dance are wines to me. I can appreciate
them but they don't light up my heart. I've learned a lot from tango and
even hope to learn more, but when Bob Dylan sings "I used to care, but
times have changed", or Eric Clapton sings and plays, "Nobody knows you
when you're down and out". That is what I really want to dance. It's not
tango music or dance,".
I respect your experiences and your feelings for they are something
absolutely personal. We know by now that tango is not for everybody. I am
glad you finally discovered it.
You like beer and Bob Dylan, that is fine. I do too. I bet that you like to
drink the beer without adding any water to it. What would happen if after
you have tasted the glory of a cold, foamy beer you see somebody adding warm
water to it? . Would not you like to share your knowledge and experience
with that individual? Can you help to think that there is some degree of
ignorancce in what he is doing.
But this is a wide world, there are all sorts of tastes. There are tastes
that are acquired easily and others that require education and time. Wine
and tango are two good examples. There are many people with whom (due to
metabolic reasons) wine and tango do not agree.
Music, dance, art in general like mathematics are universal languages. You
need to have sensitivity to appreciate them. I see that here in Argentina
most people love Swing, Rock and Roll, Jazz, the blues, the girls take
Arabic dances (belly dancing). The different communities take dancing
lessons in the art of their ancestors. Spanish, Flamenco, Brazilian, Central
American, Italian, Greek, Middle Eastern, Russian, etc. People in general
like to hear their interpretations.
They feel the tango, they feel the cha-cha-cha, a good samba, merengue or
Rock and roll. They are less inventive than you are, they do not experiment
on purpose. Those so inclined take Modern Dances knowing that there, there
is room for all sort of experimentation.
But there are others that are very limited in their sensibility and tastes
or even worse have absolutely no artistic inclination whatsoever. Some of
them play Nintendo.
I wish you good luck in your search for the blue, Celtic wine.
